ABOUT “SILIA Y EL TIEMPO”

This farruca by Vicente Amigo is from his Album “Un momento en el sonido” (2005). It is a wonderful farruca that is composed in a “slow” 4/4 bar as it is often done in a dance por farruca where as usually farruca’s for guitar solo are made in a “fast” 4/4 bar which would fit twice in a 4/4 bar in this piece.

– Difference between a “slow” and “fast” farruca:
In both “slow” and “fast” farruca the fingers move in the same speed but the harmony is spread over smaller or larger time: Counting a “fast” | 1 2 3 4 | 1 2 3 4 | is felt and counted as | 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and | in this farruca. So in a “fast” Farruca we would play | E7 | Am | E7 | Am | while in a “slow” farruca we would play | E7 | Am | in the same amount of time. This makes the falseta’s interesting (and more difficult to compose) and the compás can be played in an interesting way which is transcribed into detail in this transcription.

– Understanding the compás in this piece:
Being a “slow” 4/4 bar, performing the compás each beat is divided in 4 (sixteenth notes) which could be called playing double tempo. On top of that instead of playing 4 beats simply as 4 equal groups, Vicente plays 3 unequal groups of 1,5 – 1,5 -1 beats which is the same idea used in rumba’s, only now applied on a slower scale.

The structure of the piece is as follows:

Introduction (slightly free)
Intro but now in the tempo of the piece
First falseta (2x) (main theme)
8x Compás (doubling rhythm) + 2 x Compás
Second falseta (2x)
Compás (doubling rhythm) + 2 x Compás
Third falseta (2x)
6 x Compas (doubling rhythm) chord progression modulated to B minor with bandoneon joining
6x Compás (doubling rhythm) coming back to A minor + 2 x Compás
Main theme falseta (2x) (repetition)
8 x Compas (doubling rhythm) chord progression with bandoneon joining
Final ending (standard llamada in farruca changing to a fast 4/4 rhythm)

Furthermore you can watch this score played back on this YouTube-link in a slow version for practicing:
